If You Live In Utah, You Should Tint Your Windows, Here’s Why:

What’s The Big Deal About Tint?

SHOULD I TINT MY CAR'S WINDOWS?

Here at Salty Motor Works, we love the sun just as much as anyone else. There's nothing better than summer months during a warm summer day. But, even with all the vitamin D it gives, and lovely tans we can get from it, the Sun still can do some real harm. Typically a person spends thousands of minutes a year in their car, and a lot of that time is just baking in the harmful UV rays if you don't have tint. Depending on the VLT level of tint, you can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays! So getting some extra protection is a super easy decision in our opinion.

At the end of the day, any amount of windshield and window film will provide at least some protection for your car from:

  • Excessive heat & brightness

  • Interior wear caused by the sun’s harsh rays (think cracked dash, dried-out leather, faded colors, etc.)

  • Not to mention gaining some extra privacy from the world.

There's also the issue of safety. In fact, some tint manufacturers create tint that makes it much hard to break through glass completely, which will keep you safe in the event of someone trying to enter your car through the window. It also helps keep the window intact in the case of an accident, reducing the risk of getting cut.

So yeah, get some tint!

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AFTERMARKET & FACTORY TINT

If your vehicle came from the factory with tinting on the vehicle's windows, it was done using a "dying" process. Generally, this only applies to the rear windows of a car, and sometimes the top of the windshield to reduce sun glare. This is apparent by looking at the dark green strip across the top of older cars.

When you apply tint as an aftermarket upgrade, it is generally done using a film that is wet down then applied to the interior of an automobile's window. You can do it yourself using a DIY kit, but if you're not experienced then results will most likely be messy,  (ie: Bubbles in film, crooked placement, etc.) resulting in a need to re-apply tint later on. We'd recommend (for obvious reasons) to hire Salty Motor Works to apply it professionally. The expense may seem like a deterrent, but our quality promise guarantees that you'll walk away with a tint you're proud of, first time.

WHAT AMOUNT OF TINT IS LEGAL IN UTAH?

Window tinting is graded on the percentage of light that transfers, and how well it reduces the Visible Light Transference (VLT). The darker tint, the lower light transmittance percentage is has. the laws of what tint percentage is legal varies from each state. In Utah, the basic laws include:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or top 4 inches.

  • Front Side windows: Must allow more than 43% of light in.

  • Back Side windows: Any darkness can be used.

  • Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

Factory tint generally has a VLT of 74-85%, and you can add onto that in order to reduce the light if desired.

TINTING ALSO HELPS RESALE VALUE

Not only does tinting help with what we've already discussed above, but it also can help with resale value. The vehicle has an undisputed better look (assuming it was done by a professional and isn't bubbling. Nobody wants shoddy tint), and has been kept in better condition due to less UV damage).
